Real food for real people
Hi! My name is Matthew Sawchuk and my interest in farming and homesteading began around 2016. After watching the film, “Back to Eden Gardening” and then videos on YouTube by homesteading families, something in my mind just clicked. (It was probably the Holy Spirit guiding me.)
After seeing these families work together, growing their own food and then sharing that around the dinner table, that was the first time I looked at, I guess you would call it a lifestyle, and said, “I want that!”
Why I started the farm
Let’s try this little thought experiment.
Imagine you need open heart surgery. Obviously, you wouldn’t let just any stranger perform the surgery. You first want to trust the surgeon operating on you. After all, this person literally has your life in his hands. Naturally, you can’t really trust someone if you don’t get a chance to know them first, right?
Let me ask you, do you know who grows your food?
We don’t need heart surgery every day, but we do need to eat. We should be able to look our farmer in the eye and know that our food is safely grown. Most food sold at the grocery store, especially if it is not in season, have been sprayed with harmful synthetic pesticides and grown using chemicals to make them grow bigger, faster and store longer than God intended them, while having four to ten times LESS nutritional value than the same food your grandparents enjoyed.
By the time the “Frankenfood” gets to your plate, it has travelled 1500 miles and has passed through seven different hands. Then a big salmonella or E-coli outbreak happens. Hundreds if not thousands of people get sick, some unfortunately die and everyone throws their hands up saying, “How could this possibly have happened?”
Meanwhile, the “factory farm” owners send out a press release saying how sorry they are that all this has happened and promise to change things so it doesn’t happen again, all while counting their big wads of money in their third vacation home.
Or a nation-wide food shortage presents itself and you start panicking about how you’re going to feed your family. Whether food that’s normally imported is forbidden to leave their country of origin or nobody is willing to work in the grocery stores or drive the trucks. If you’re an “undesirable” (cough, cough), then food security is a major issue.
Imagine you could wave a magic wand and wake up tomorrow knowing exactly where your food comes from and who grows it. Knowing your farmer, and having your farmer know you, would give you security and peace of mind because you would know that what you’re feeding your family is safe, nutritious and delicious.
